Kuwait freezes final stage of Port Mubarak

Recent agreement with Iraq sees work suspended on the creation of the artificial island

Kuwait has suspended construction works on the fourth and final stage of a controversial Kuwaiti port following the signing of a recent agreement with Iraq.

The Kuwaiti Cabinet took the decision to suspend working on creating an artificial island because it would have closed down Iraqi ports, said Dr Fadel Safar Ali Safar, Kuwait’s Minister of Public Works and State Minister of Municipal Affairs.

The Mubarak Port project, which was originally planned to have 60 wharves, now has only 24 wharves and piers, Safar said. Kuwait began the construction of the port in Bubiyan Islandin April last year.
