Construction to commence on Abu Dhabi-funded Yemen dam

Dam deemed one of Yemen’s key strategic projects to boost agricultural production

yemen, dam, abu dhabiWork on Yemen’s US $98.6 million Hassan Dam, funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), will commence within the next few weeks, a senior Yemeni official has announced.

The project is part of an AED 2.385 billion ($650 million) grant offered by the government of Abu Dhabi to Yemen to finance a number of development projects, according to Emirates News Agency.
The dam, located in Abyan province, will irrigate 10,000 hectares, benefiting directly about 13,000 families, Eng. Ahmed Al Ushla, undersecretary for irrigation at the ministry of agriculture and irrigation said.
It is 80% financed by the ADFD and 20% by the Yemeni government, according to the report.
”The dam is one of the key strategic projects that will boost agricultural production from cereals, fruits, vegetables, fodder and animal wealth and help the country meet local market demand and increase Yemen’s exports,” Al Ushla was reported as saying.
