Local Egyptian media has reported that a consortium comprising Egyptian contractor Hassan Allam Construction as well as Chinese companies Shanghai Electric and Dongfang Electric Cooperation has successfully won the contract to build a new 6,000MW coal-fired power plant in Hamrawein, the Red Sea, after they offered the lowest price.
State-owned newspaper Al Ahram reported that the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company was also considering other bids including a consortium featuring Orascom Construction, Elsewedy Electric and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems and another led by General Electric. The final bid of $4.4 billion is substantially lower than one of the reported bids of $5.8 billion.
Egyptian Electricity said it will sign the construction deal with the consortium shortly, with consruction projected to last between six to seven years.
