Kharafi building new city in Kuwait

Contractor expects to complete project in June 2013

Kuwaiti contractor Mohammed Abulmohsin Al Kharafi & Sons Company (MAK) has said that work on the Sabah Al Ahmed Housing Project is ongoing.

A new project being developed by the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, the project will eventually house 124,500 inhabitants in 9,574 housing units. The new Sabah Al Ahmed City will be located in the Wafra and Mina Abdulla roads.

Once complete, it will cover an area of 3,500 hectares and be circled by a 70-m-wide ring road along with a 100-m green belt around its perimeter, in line with its goal of being an “eco-city”.

It will be approximately 65km from Kuwait City.

The contract is expected to complete in June 2013 and has so far taken 37 months. There will also be additional road infrastructure to deal with the increased traffic generated from the new complex.

MAK’s scope of works on the project includes 1,271 government houses, two kindergartens, two primary schools, one intermediate school, one major mosque, six local mosques, three shopping precincts, 37 electrical substations, and various infrastructure works involving a total a built-up area of 595,575sqm.

A spokesman for Kharafi explained that: “Sabah Al Ahmed City has been designed to effectively handle the ever growing population and easing the need for suitable housing in the future in Kuwait.”
